Katya is a singer, songwriter and producer with early support from BBC Introducing and Radio 1.
Her jazz-infused upcoming debut single ‘I’ll Take Your Number’ caught the ears of BBC Radio London presenter Jess Iszatt during the Live Lounge Introducing Competition. Jess spun it on her show and subsequently took it over to Jack Saunders’ Future Artists show on Radio 1. It features trumpet by Jackson Mathod (Stormzy, Jordan Rakei) and is being mixed by Spike Stent (Ed Sheeran, Bjork, Massive Attack).
Katya studied Music at Oxford University followed by a masters in Popular Music from the University of West London. Her genre-blending music and intriguing solo live set-up – in which she layers guitar loops, sings, makes beats and triggers samples from her production – earned her spots performing at Wilderness Festival, opening for the duo Ward Thomas and playing sold out shows at Bush Hall and Laylow.
As a self-taught producer with a background in classical music, Katya draws on an eclectic mix of influences from Massive Attack to Anderson .Paak and Tracy Chapman to Sevdaliza. Her alternative indie soul songs are rooted in tradition whilst being playfully experimental.
Of English, Belgian, Georgian and Armenian ancestry, Katya was inspired by her time living in the Caucasus region and incorporates found sounds she recorded whilst there. Emotionally impacted by the escalation of fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh, Katya created: ‘I’ve Known War’. Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) was among many who were touched by this piece: “Very emotional, I love this song”.
Katya was responsible for music curation at ‘Art In The Age Of Now’, an underground festival of the arts that captured the zeitgeist of London post-lockdown. Held in the derelict Fulham Town Hall, it brought together over 100 artists “to revive and boost London’s cultural heartbeat” and was covered by Forbes magazine, Time Out and The Evening Standard.
