PAULA ZVANE
Paula Zvane is a Latvian artist based in London. She has studied painting, performance, and sculpture in Latvia, Iceland, and the UK and has participated in numerous residencies and exhibitions worldwide. She is a 2023 MFA graduate from Central Saint Martins, where she was awarded the Cecil Lewis sculpture scholarship. In her work, she merges and transforms shapes of nature to find connection and common ground between species and narratives foreign to one another. She works with various artistic mediums and materials, especially metal, latex and wool.
“I create connections between natural creatures and materials through tactile sensitivity, amalgamated in unseen combinations as a form of relation, to explore, to understand the unknown. My methods of research lead to innovative ways of merging various artistic mediums and transforming experiences that are depicted in objects and installations.
Animism and mysticism emphasise the transformational process of objects and their semiotics. Work as a play, as a trap. The amalgamation of both, of the opposites, like a mirror, shows the indefinite truth of an object. Contrasts - dangerous and sheltering simultaneously allow us to experience connection through contrast and the unknown.”
