Alexandra Smart is a Welsh/Scottish artist currently based in the Scottish Highlands. She is a recent graduate of the Glasgow School of Art, where she achieved a First-Class Honours degree in Sculpture and Environmental Art. Working across a variety of mediums, including installation, ceramics, textiles and illustration, her work aims to make sense of a fragmented and often confusing childhood and family dynamic. She explores the mythology and folktales of her two homes, Scotland and Wales, alongside personal family mythologies and archives to understand her own identity and concept of “home.” Motifs from laundry appear throughout the work, symbolising both the care and connection of her grandmother and the vulnerability that comes with addressing deeply personal topics, like feeling as exposed as a pair of knickers on a washing line.
Her practice often begins with graphic illustrations and prints, which then evolve into sculptural works and installations. These sculptures retain an illustrative and playful quality, inviting viewers into a world shaped by daydreams; one tinged with magic, grief, and nostalgia.
