Jiwon Yoo Yeonsinnae (b. 1997) is a painter and installation artist based in Seoul and London. He

Documenting something or someone involves closely observing and understanding the subject, which also serves to form a new kind of relationship with it. Yoo addresses the issues that arise when everyday objects and events become subjects of documentation as his main research topic. He particularly critiques the hierarchical relationship between the observer and the observed when a painting is used as a documenting medium and the loss of the observed’s agency by becomingobjectified when painted on canvas. Driven by this concern, he explores methods of collaborative documentation.
As a documentarian, he explores how humans interact with things in their daily lives and considers how they can establish relationships to coexist with these entities. His work seeks ways in which everyday objects can voluntarily or cooperatively participate in the documentation process and where the documentarian can relinquish decision-making power. This approach is applied throughout the painting process, from pre-production to post-production.
Following this, Yoo examines whether the outcome can be understood as a collaboration with things and documents his findings in a report. Through his work, he aims to explore new ways of human- thing interaction and how they can coexist in everyday life as equal participants.
